Prairie Journal Workshop
Participants use colorful scraps and papers to design and create their own journals, at the same time writing a poem about the experience. At the end of the workshop, participants present their books and read their poems.

Kickstart your creative journey on January 11, 2025, at the Prairie Journal Workshop, a unique event where art meets writing. This workshop, hosted by Professors Michaela Valli Groeblacher and Kim Stanley, invites participants to explore journal-making and creative writing in a hands-on environment. The event will take place on the J. O. Sundstrom Conference Center’s second floor and include a catered lunch.

Workshop Overview

Journal(ing) and Bookmaking
In this creative workshop, Professors Michaela Valli Groeblacher and Kim Stanley will guide participants through designing and creating their journals while encouraging them to write poetry about their experiences. The workshop is a blend of artistic expression and literary creativity, offering a chance to explore both visual and written forms of journaling.

Participants will learn basic techniques such as:

  • Designing, gluing, and sewing pages
  • Assembling books into hardcovers or creating artist’s books

At the end of the workshop, each participant will present their handmade journal and share their poem. Attendees will leave with at least one completed book and the skills to continue journaling and bookmaking independently.

Materials and Tools:
All materials and tools are provided. However, participants are encouraged to bring (copies of) their favorite photographs, pieces of fabric, or any flat memorabilia such as postcards, stamps, letters, or flat buttons.
